Mangos
Return to the fruits page.Mangos have to be one of my favorites fruits. Of the dozens of fruits I've eaten, these are by far the best. Recently, while visiting a food chain in Chicago, Caputo's, we found boxes and boxes of mangos on sale. They were selling for an excellent price! So we purchased 96 mangos. The best thing about these mangos was that they were grown organically. The company's name is New Harvest Organics, and you can find them at their website: newharvestorganics.com. I would definitely recommend these mangos!
Their are many types of mangos, ranging from small and yellow, to medium and red, to larger and green. Each mango has a different taste. One of my favorites are the large green ones; they are the easiest to eat as they have practically no pulp - strings - for those who have eaten mangos before, they will appreciate this!
How do you eat a mango?
There are many ways to peel and eat a mango. My favorite way is as follows. Get a knife, stand the mango on the table, with the stem bud pointing up. Slice the knife down the sides of the mango, parallel to the seed. If you are cutting across the seed, you will know soon enough and won't do that again! Slice both sides off the seed. Then take those "halves" and cut horizontal and vertical lines across them, pull the half open at the sides, and eat the chunks off. After you're done with the sides, pull the skin off the seed, and just eat it with your hands! Warning: eating a mango is messy, no matter who you are, you're going to get juice all over your hands and face.
The names of the different types of mangos are: haden, t. atkins, kent, keitt, and ataulfo. Most grocery stores carry mangos, the only question is, at what price. If you haven't tried one recently, buy a few regardless of the price. But if you can find them for $0.50 a piece or less, buy several dozen.
Mangos make great smoothies!
Blend up mango chunks (but not the seed or skin) in a blender along with some of your other favorite fruits. Note: don't blend up mango by itself, you will NOT like the taste. Make sure to blend some other type of fruit in with it, along with some soymilk.
Do I buy mangos organic?
If you can find them at a low price, like we did, yes, go for it! But if you can't find organic mangos at all, or if they are outrageous, we would recommend that any mango is ok to buy. Organic means that a product is grown without extra chemicals, and pesticides. But mangos grow on huge trees, wild, or in farms, and they don't NEED these extra things to grow. Insects leave them alone for the most part. So if the mangos you are buying are NOT organic, don't worry. Also, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) lists the mango among produce that consistantly contains the lowest amounts of pesticides. Have a look here.
