Apple
Return to the fruits page. The apple is a delicious fruit. There are several dozen types of apples. Some apples are nice and red, some have that perfect golden color; while others have a blend of colors, but have delicious flavors. Granny smith is a good apple for making apple pies, apple crisps, apple cobblers, etc. Gala, Fuji, Golden Delicious, are good apples for eating fresh, or making some apple sauce.
So, should we buy apples organic or non-organic? According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG), apples that are grown conventionally (with pesticides) consistently contain the high amount of pesticides. Also, if you want to see other fruits and vegetables that should be purchased organic, consult this list.Whenever possible, purchase apples that are organic.
Apples can be eaten raw, peeled, cut, cored, we are only limited by our imagination.
A suggested way of eating an apple every morning:
Many mornings, I will eat several apples for breakfast. A delicious way to eat apples is to make fresh applesauce daily.
1. Grab some apples (preferably organic), remove the stem and chop them up. - If the apple is organic, and it is a healthy apple, the whole thing, minus the stem, can be used for apple sauce, provided you have a good blender.
2. After chopping the apple(es) into small pieces, I put the pieces into my Magic Bullet Blender - which is the perfect size for 1-2 apples. I then add a small amount of water, so that it reaches about 3/4 of an inch up the cup. For taste, add some raisins or dates, and to make it thicker, add some almonds. I then blend all this up, and spread the applesauce over a piece of toast (I first put almond butter or tahini on the toast). Fresh, homemade applesauce is wonderful for a healthy start each morning. Also, when you blend up your apples fresh each morning, you have the benefit of enzymes and nutrients which are still present in the apple.
Apart from eating apples fresh each morning, they can be used as primary ingredients in many food items, for one such example, have a look at our delicious Apple Crisp Recipe.
